More about vision screening and vision problems.

Screenings (or checks) of vision, hearing, height & weight, and scoliosis (sideways curve of the back) are done by the school nurse each year.  State law requires these screenings.   If you do not wish your child to be screened (checked), you must write a note to your child's school.

Click on each type of screening below to learn more about what is included in the exam.  The school nurse checks students in the following grades:

Vision Screening:          Kindergarten, 1, 4, 7 10

Hearing Screening      Kindergarten, 1, 4, 7, 10

Scoliosis                     7

Height and Weight:      Kindergarten, 1, 4, 7, 10

  • You or your child's teacher may ask for a vision and hearing screenings at any time.
  • A vision and hearing screening, height and weight, and review of their health history is done on all children tested for special education needs.
  •  A screening is to help find possible problems with seeing and hearing or other problems.  The nurse may then ask that your child see a doctor for a more complete test.
  • A screening is not a substitute for a complete test by a specialist.

IMPORTANT: If you receive a note from the school nurse recommending a vision exam for your child, and you do not have insurance or cannot afford the cost of the appointment or glasses, the school nurse has a program that can help.

Download and fill out the Sight for Students application and return it to the school nurse. She may be able to give you a gift certificate for a free exam and glasses.
